White Van Man

I got to play White Van Man for work today, we are shifting kit to the clients site at the moment, and we needed to move a van load of servers and workstations 180 miles to their site. I got the bring the van back home. It's the first time I've driven anything bigger than a car, and it was strangely enjoyable.

It felt odd getting in my car to come home again after work, but that might be because it was 9pm having been in work since 8am Smiling

Jelly babies and the pox.

Went down to south Wales to see Kev, Cathy and Meg this weekend, it was a long drive (280 miles each way), but it was great to see them all again. Meg was suffering a bit from Chicken pox, but we got to watch some kids TV and I got engrosed in one of Megs DVDs called Barnyard Smiling. Kev showed me resident evil 4 on his Wii, which looked great, I sucked at it Smiling. We also played punch out, which I also sucked at Smiling.

We all trooped off to caerphilly castle on saturday and by chance, they had a medieval event going on, it's a nice place too.

Resolution

Clare phone me at work today and told me she was moving out. Our marriage has been in trouble for at least a year. It was getting to the point where something had to be done, even sharing a house was no longer working. So whilst sad, it was no great surprise to me.

It's all been pretty amicable so far, we have argued when it comes to sorting out the material things, and nothing can resolve the emotional side of things, but at least being honest and practicle seems to be working for both of us. I hope things carry on this way.

I certainly feel no animosity towards Clare, these things happen.

Force feedback and LCD support in JInput

Some time ago I was asked about adding support for the G15 LCD display in JInput. It seems like a good idea, more devices are beginning to appear with programmable LCD displays. We are still waiting on the hardware, but this could be an interesting diversion Smiling.

On a related note. Over on the JInput forums, someone recently asked about supporting full force feedback, not just rumblers. It seems sensible, but I have no force feedback devices other than basic rumblers. A quick look the APIs in Linux and Direct Input (which is what JInput uses under the covers) suggest similarities that would make this reasonably painless. It seems from my limited research that OSX support for force feedback is provided by Immersion, but I'm not 100% sure.

What I could really do with is some hardware to play with and get things working, but that means spending cash, which is in short supply still. Guess I'll just have to muddle through working from API documentation, and just hope it all works Laughing out loud

Forums

A little bit of geekery yesterday, and the New Dawn Software forums are back up and functioning correctly. Event update phpBB whilst I was at it. Smiling

I lead an exciting life Eye-wink.

Like a bottle of coke, shaken and ready to explode

Some times you are told things in confidence, that are so exciting, that you want to run around screaming about it. Ok, it may only be exciting to a certain group of people, like geeks, but to us, it's fantastic.

I get trusted with information at work that some believe would be useful to competitors, and that information never gets divulged, but it's not exciting.

The promise not to say anything stands in both cases, but the former makes me feel like a kid with fire crackers Smiling

Please hide the matches Eye-wink

Bike update

As my birthday present of my parents and grand parents, I was told to take the bike to a garage to get it sorted, so I can trust it and start using it again.

Apparently the carbs were full of gunk, and one of the chokes was not working, which would explain the starting problems. Also the clock was what was draining the battery if left for a night.

Going to see about getting the guy to clean out the tank for me, so the fuel filters don't get blocked so quickly, but otherwise, it sounds like all systems go. It even passed it's MOT Smiling

Typical

Well, I managed to get the day off on my birthday, by being ill. So I get to sit at home feeling sorry for myself. Still, I've managed to listen to my new Fairport CD lots, and done a few lines of code. I've managed to avoid day time TV so far, but I fear that this afternoon, my brain might give up and I'll be forced into doing things that require no thought.

Different approaches

Whilst I give up and start again on my mammoth project, Kev keeps churning out cute little games that work and play well. His latest Mootox has kept me entertained for a few hours Smiling
